State official attempts to obstruct Christian funeral service

December 11, 2018

At around 6:30 a.m., the Ambandanavelli Grama Sevaka (GS) and the head of the Rural Development Society (RDS) from Komathalamadu visited a funeral home and informed the relative of the deceased that the funeral would only be allowed to take place if they adhered to Hindu burial rites. The pastor informed them that the burial will take place at the new cemetery allocated for Christian funerals and will be according to Christian traditions. The GS told the pastor to ensure that there would be an appropriate place to bury the deceased, otherwise the family would be forced to perform the funeral according to Hindu traditions.
