Police inaction following church attack

VERIFIED
March 26, 2018

The pastor contacted the police emergency hotline immediately after the attack on his church. However, the police only arrived 10 hours later; at around 11 a.m. 03 policemen arrived at the church and asked the pastor to name a suspect. The pastor, however, was unwilling to name any suspects since he did not witness the attack. The policemen then left without investigating any further and without taking the pastor’s statement. They advised him to lodge a police complaint if he suspected anyone of perpetrating the attack. On the 28th of March, the pastor lodged a complaint at the Gampola Police Station, holding number CIB (1) 362/532, following his lawyer’s advice that he was well within his rights to do so even without naming a specific suspect.
