At approximately 01:15 p.m., while the pastor was conducting a meeting with an indigenous community to identify their needs, around six Buddhist monks and 12 individuals arrived, made false allegations against the pastor and his work with the community. They began physically assaulting him and strangling him. The pastor has been assisting this community for several years and they spoke in defence of him.
The crowd then took him to the Dambana Junction where the Officer-in Charge (OIC) of the Mahiyanganaya Police Station was waiting. He told the pastor to leave the village since the Buddhist monks objected to his presence.
The pastor admitted himself into the Padiyathalawa Hospital for treatment. At around 03 p.m., a police officer from the Mahiyanganaya Police Station arrived and recorded his statement.
